I quit celebrating who I was as a dancer when I quit ballet at age seventeen. I wasn’t good enough to get into Juilliard or to dance with Joffrey, so I simply gave up. Looking back of course, I see how my reasoning was convoluted. I went through years of identity loss, depression, feelings of hopeless and lack of purpose. I couldn’t even watch ballet without feeling agony.
It took me seven years to realize that ballet was an inescapable part of me. A part that could not be silenced or forgotten with age. I concluded that I didn’t have to be a world–renowned dancer to receive significance from classical ballet. I realized that standing at the barre, doing pliés was where I belonged. No other outlet could channel the passion that burst within me when I piqued onto pointe or did grande jetées across the floor! So I decided to start training again, just for me. At age twenty-three, I jumped back into intermediate ballet. I danced multiple times a week with fierce determination. After a year of this I was not only back in shape—I was better than when I quit.
I have lived in many countries and have known all sorts of people. It amazes me that regardless of culture, nationality, or socioeconomic status, people are universally moved by the language of ballet. Many women have said to me, "if only I had danced as a child...I've always wished had!" I began to see that there is an inner ballerina inside many of us—she simply wants out. And it's never too late.
Ballet dancers are some of the most unique artists I have ever met because they are fierce athletes. We are passionate beyond words—we need our bodies to express ourselves. Nothing else will do. Unfortunately, we are relegated to the dance studio; caught up in hours of rehearsals, we sweat our life away and lose our toe nails for only a few productions a year. I wanted to create a brand for all of us: for the focused and determined ballet student who stops at nothing to forge their dream, for the mom who funds her child’s ballet classes by working two jobs or sacrificing hours of her week, and for the forty year old who just sheepishly started adult beginner ballet classes. I celebrate each of you, and I call forth the ballerina in each of us.
We are a community and a culture that deserves to be identified in the everyday world. This is why we created custom designed apparel just for you: the primas, the students, the moms, the studio owners, and the choreographers. You can now transmit the passion with which you dance and express yourself physically into what you wear every day.
When you're not on the dance floor, what are you expressing?
