1. STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE

Professionals, dance teachers, pilates instructors, dance therapists, and even dance medicine doctors have all become increasingly aware of the importance of CORE training. CORE strength can prevent injury and significantly improve your turns.

Try adding a basic CORE routine to your daily practice. It should include a combination of: standard crunches, bridges, front and side planks, mountain climbers, and bicycle crunches. Or try a Pilates Abs workout. This will also strengthen your back and hips. Having a strong CORE is essential if you want sharp, controlled turns.

2. PRACTICE BALANCING
A great exercise for this is to relevé passé from fifth position plié, and hold in relevé for five seconds. Do this on both sides from fifth, second, and fourth position. Try not to hold the barre for this exercise. Balance with arms in first position.

3. PRACTICE SPOTTING
Spotting cannot be understated. If your spot isn't sharp neither will your pirouette be. Practice by placing a sticker or some object on the wall or mirror (if in a studio) and simply focus on spotting it from the beginning till the END of your pirouette. This means that you focus on it as you prepare your pirouette, as you plié, then as you begin to turn--whip your head around to see that spot again as soon as you can.

4. PIROUETTE WITH YOUR BODY, NOT YOUR ARMS

Often times my pirouettes are off because my arms start to do weird things. Try to not whip your arms around or open them very wide in second. Make sure your arms go from second to first at the same time as your passé comes up. Arms and legs should always be coordinated.
